About us

Founder: Rob is an Emergency Nurse Practitioner, with a MSc in Advanced Health Care Practice. He has held senior nursing / management positions in the NHS including Matron for Emergency Care, and as Head of Clinical Education at an Acute NHS Hospital Trust. He also spent 13 years as a Clinical Examiner at the University of Plymouth.

He has worked in Event Medicine for over 15 years, this has included holding the position of Stadium Medical Officer at an English Football League Club; he has also been the Event Medical Officer at music concerts, at Harbour / Beach Music Festivals, and has worked for the BBC as a Unit Medic.

Additionally, he has worked as a Subject Matter Expert for NHS England’s ‘New Hospital Programme – Emergency Care’, and remains a Clinical Reviewer for RCN journals Emergency Nurse & Nursing Management. He is currently exploring opportunities to study Event Medicine at PhD level.

Backstory: The National Event Medicine Observatory (NEMO) is an original idea conceived by Rob based on his experience of working in the event industry environment, and as such the level of medical services at events did not always match the standards he felt should be provided.

It is his belief, that Event Medicine requires;

  • Generic Governance Standards
  • An Evidence Based Approach
  • Raised Profile Across the Event Industry & Regulatory Bodies

Rob is passionate about Event Medicine, he sees NEMO as a centre point for Event Medicine clinicians, event planners, and event safety partners.

Rob’s broader vision for NEMO is to influence and change the way event medical services are governed nationally, to challenge the existing standards of event medicine planning and operational practice, and to develop safer models of ‘spectator care’ in conjunction with event safety partners.

NEMO’S AMBITIONS ARE:

To improve governance standards within Event Medicine.

  • through collaborative working with clinicians, regulatory bodies, event safety partners & policy makers.
  • to inform the ‘narrative’ through research analysis, circulation & informed debate of publications, and advise on policy development.
  • look ahead and consider the future challenges within the Event Medicine sector.

To establish evidence-based approach to Event Medicine.

  • through research, publications, and the analysis of event medicine studies.
  • provide clinician led data interpretation or support to non-clinician researchers.
  • advocate that clinicians, rather than other parties, are identifying what practices work best for clinicians.

TO ENHANCE AWARENESS OF EVENT MEDICINE ACROSS THE EVENT INDUSTRY.

  • through advising on event safety, educating around event medical practices, and collaborating with event safety partners.
  • promote policy development to enhance safer spectator experiences within the events industry.
  • to improve greater understanding of the dynamics and functionality of Event Medicine across the wider event industry.
