STAND OUT MAGAZINE … Summer 2024 Event Medicine Artice
NEMO would like to thank, Caroline Clift the Editor of Stand Out Magazine, the events industry’s leading publication on all things events, has written an article about the potential changes within event medicine regulation, that are on the horizon for event planners, event clinicians, and event safety officers.
It is a super two-page article, bringing to the attention of the wider events industry, the consultations and work being undertaken by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and the Department for Health & Social Care (DHSC) around event medicine regulation; and includes the thoughts and opinions of clinicians whose business it is to provide quality health care to the spectators / attendees of events, should they become injured or unwell on such an occasion.
A few quotes from the article:
NEMO … ‘Event Medicine providers’ operational practice is currently based on the Purple Guide or the Green Guide, … this guidance has served the industry well for a number of years, but this needs to change to ensure improved standards and established governance frameworks’.
Dr Chris Howes – CEO Festival Medical, and co-founder of the Event Medical Association … when discussing Chapter 5 of the Purple Guide (Medical Chapter) believes ‘that the new chapter continues to be misused by licensing authorities and organisers as a substitute for regulation rather than advice and guidance’.
Dave Hawkins – CEO of Met Medical … ‘The Purple Guide has championed the need to use CQC regulated organisations when choosing a medical provider. … The current consultation proposes removing the exemption, meaning any medical provider, except those only providing basic first aid, will need to be registered and meet the standards set out in the Health and Social Care Act’.
The article contains other insights into potential event medicine regulation changes and how these developments may affect event medical providers and the wider events industry.

NEMO welcomes these developments in their broadest sense, and is currently seeking engagement in the process with the CQC and the DHSC.
